Overview

This 2-day tour in Georgia takes you out of Tbilisi, and to the churches and fortresses of northern Georgia, along the Georgian Military Highway. Start with Mtskheta and Jvari, two of the most important places in the Georgian Orthodox Church. Jvari is high on a hilltop, overlooking Mtskheta and the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Continue to Ananuri, a medieval fortress, located on the slopes of the Zhinvali Reservoir. Though it’s not the oldest building you’ll see, it’s a great example of fortresses as they were built along major trade routes and as they served Georgian royal families. As you continue further up into the mountains, the slopes get steeper and steeper. At the top of one of these steep hills, right above the town of Stepantsminda, is Gergeti Trinity Church. Once used to store the church’s treasures during times of invasion, today this church has a great view of the towering Mount Kazbegi. Spend the night in the small town of Juta, before spending your second day trekking through the mountains and all the way to Juta Lake. This is the best Georgia tour for seeing both the natural and cultural wonders of this beautiful country, all in just two days.

Day 1:Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Ananuri – Kazbegi – Juta

After breakfast, drive to Mtskheta, one of the oldest towns and the cultural and religious center of Georgia. Mtskheta was the capital of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the third century BC. Visit Jvari Church, a true architectural masterpiece of the early Medieval Period built on a hilltop. You will enjoy the views of the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Visit Svetitskhoveli, the main cathedral of Mtskheta and a sacred place where the robe of Christ is being kept. Continue to Ananuri architectural complex, a former residence of Argveti Dukes. The complex features churches and towers dating back to the 16-17th centuries, beautifully overlooking the Jinvali reservoir. Next destination is Kazbegi, a small town with the views of Mount Kazbek (or Mkinvari) 5033 m, the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains. Reach Gergeti Holy Trinity Church located at an altitude of 2170 m on 4WD vehicle. Drive to beautiful village Juta for overnight.

Day 2: Juta – Trekking – Tbilisi

In the morning, hike towards Juta lake passing by near Zeta camping, Five Seasons and finishing at picturesque Juta Lake. Enjoy stunning views and take photos with beautiful mountains in the background at elevation of 2500 meters above sea level. Return to Tbilisi. Drop off at your hotel/place.
